Picking The Best Tattoo

If you decide to get your first tattoo then that is a huge decision that is not to be taken lightly, after all if you don't like the design years later then you only have some very expensive and painful options left to remove it. If you find a really good artist then they can try to cover over a bad tattoo, but that is a complex process so really it is better to choose carefully and get it right first time.

Here are some tips to help you avoid the most common tattoo problems:

Make sure you know who will be doing the work: At the start of the page we discussed choosing the right tattoo, but it is also crucial that you pick the right person to do the work on you as well. The skill level of artists varies massively and in most countries I don't think there is even an exam that people need to take for them to set up as a tattoo artists.

So that is why if I go to get tattoo now then the first thing I do is buy some tattoo magazines and have a look through for featured artists. The interviews they do and awards they give allow you to highlight which artists are skillful and passionate and which are just out to make some fast money, then you can choose from there. Ok you are probably going to have to travel to actually get some time with one of those artists, but when the result lasts a lifetime then isn't it worth a bit of extra effort? It also hurts less if your artist knows what they are doing, so if you are having tattoos on your feet which is supposed to be very painful then you will glad you picked somebody good!

Avoid words in the design at all costs or triple check they are correct: Unfortunately misspelled words are one of the most common and embarrassing mistakes that I see happening. Most of the time it is a lack of planning that causes this, somebody comes up with an idea for some cool words to have tattooed on their body and they just walk in and ask for them to be done. Instead if you take the time to write it out in Microsoft Word and actually print it out (so there aren't any issues with them not being able to read your handwriting) then it will spell check it for you and after triple checking it is all ok you can print it out and take it along with you.

Plan ahead: This is something I wish somebody had told me years ago. You might not think you are going to get any more tattoos after the first one, but you probably will so spend some time thinking about the future. Think about what you could have done if you wanted to expand the design you want to get, is it easy to add to and make bigger or will it look out of place? Most people who get one end up getting at least a few more tattoos, and trust me it looks odd to just have a collection of single tattoos, the best designs are those that have a lot going on in them and cover a larger areas.
