Some Tips On Getting Your First Tattoo
If you decide to get your first tattoo then that is a huge decision that is not to be taken lightly, after all if you don't like the design years later then you only have some very expensive and painful options left to remove it. Yes artists can do some wonderful things to cover tattoos up (or you can just cover it with a solid black one like I did!) but it is a lot easier to get it done correctly the first time.
Below is some advice to help you make sure you get a tattoo you can be proud of:
Be careful about who you pick to do the work: We've already discussed how important it is that you get your tattoo right, and that means getting the right person to actually do the work. You'll find that the level of skill between artists varies more than you can imagine, and in fact I don't think in most places that there are any qualifications someone needs to get before they start.
That is why when I want a new tattoo then I look at the tattoo magazines and read about some of the artists featured in there. By reading the interviews and looking at the awards that people have been given then you can easily see which artists are the most skillful and passionate which makes choosing a lot easier. Yes that may mean you need to travel because the chance of an artist near you being featured is slim, but it will be well worth it in the end. Also it hurts less when you have a professional doing it as they don't go too deep, which is important if you are having it done on a really painful place, like having feet tattoos for instance.
Please check and double check any words: This is one of the most common problems that I see with people who have had tattoos done, and one that is easily avoided. Often this happens when people want specific words or a phrase inked onto themselves and they just walk in and tell the artist what they want and let them do it. A much better and safer option is to actually type out what you want on the computer and print it, then you can spell check it to make sure everything is ok and the artist can't misread your handwriting, then double check the spelling after they have written it out on the template too.
Plan ahead: This is something that I am guilty of unfortunately, don't let your excitement for getting your first tattoos stop you from thinking about what you might want in the future. It is important that you leave room to expand your design if it is in a popular place like on your arm or back, and how easy is the design you chose to add to later or blend in with other tattoos? You will probably end up getting at least two or three more tattoos, if not a lot more, and if they are all individual designs which don't mesh in any way then that can look strange, so instead follow a theme or get multiple tattoos in one area which join up nicely to form a much larger piece.
