Laser Printing Printed PCBs

One of the hardest steps in making your own printed PCBs at home has been getting your designs onto your PCB material. You either had to do trace transfers with specialized pens, light boxes, and other tools; or photo reproduction, which is a specialized and rather expensive process. Affordable home laser jet printers have made both of those tasks obsolete for the home printed circuit manufacturer.

Toner transfer is an easy and inexpensive method of transferring your PCB traces to your PCB materials. You will need photo glossy paper, a laser jet printer, and a clothing iron.

How to Use the Toner Transfer Method for Printed PCBs

1. The first step requires you to print an exact scale image of your PCB tracing. Use your printer’s darkest and highest quality image settings

2. Cut away the excess paper leaving an edge just slightly larger than your PCB board

3. Use 400-grit or higher sander paper to prepare the surface of you copper board. Then clean the surface of your PCB material with rubbing alcohol. Be careful to remove any fingerprints lefts on the copper

4. Set the clothing iron to high and let it come to temperature for at least 10 minutes. Turn off the steam feature or empty the water from the iron if you can’t

5. Place the copper board onto a heat-resistant surface. Lay the hot iron on the copper and let it heat the surface for about 5 minutes

6. Carefully set the printed traces onto the preheated PCB material and put the iron on both. Apply even pressure. If your iron’s surface is smaller than your board, you must slowly move iron over the paper’s surface to even apply heat to it. Do this for about three to five minutes. The transfer will be complete when you can start to see the traces through the back of the paper

7. Immediately place the board and paper into a container of hot water. Soak the paper for at least 15 to 20 minutes or until the paper begins to separate from the copper, leaving the transfer on the copper’s surface
